February is Heart Health Month! One of the top ways to improve your heart health is to exercise daily. While this is sage advice, completing at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise a day can be difficult when faced with all the other work and home tasks that might take priority.
One method to encourage daily exercise is by creating a home gym! Here are 5 easy steps to get started:
Step 1: Find a space in your home that can be used for workouts. If you are short on space, get creative. A patio or deck may be a suitable space for exercising and equipment storage and also encourages getting outdoors!
Step 2: Ensure the space is conducive to motivating workouts. Natural light, bright, airy colors, plants an for oxygen boost, and removal of clutter and electronic gadgets or distractions will all help your space work for you!
Step 3: Stock your home gym. Selecting exercise equipment doesn’t need to break the bank or take up a ton of space. The key is to select equipment that you will use. For additional tips on selecting home fitness equipment, see this great article.
Step 4: Organize your home gym. Find methods for storing and organizing your equipment. Make the equipment tidy but still visible so it’s not easily ignored. Find ways to make your workout more enjoyable by adding padding to a hard floor, mirror for visual performance indicators, speakers for music, or a method to entertain yourself with books and/or TV shows that you’ve been meaning to catch up on, all while working out.
Step 5: Use your home gym! If you are finding yourself not taking advantage of your equipment or space, see if anything needs to be adjusted by revisiting the four steps above. Additionally, think through how you can motivate yourself to workout or set aside the necessary time to make it happen!
